Can you tell us a little bit about what is happening in your area?
We just hosted MVC’s Fifth Annual Culture of Writing Festival, which is an expression of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and its commitment to celebrating cultural voices in our community. The event was a great success, with hundreds of people joining in the festivities.
What can Mountain View College (MVC) expect regarding this project?
The MVC community was able to attend and participate in a variety of workshops, shared-presentations, and performances, which celebrated writing and addressed the academic concept of “Writing across the Curriculum.”
What is the planned timeline for this project?
The Culture of Writing Festival was hosted on Thursday, March 23, 2017 in MVC’s Treetop Lounge. Various writing workshops were offered between 10:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., with a lunch ceremony at 12:30 p.m. and a closing ceremony at 6:00 p.m.
What is a secret tip to keeping calm during such a process?
I believe that the best TWO TIPS for keeping calm are 1) planning ahead and 2) working together as a team. Planning the event as far in advance as possible allows for time to make sure that all necessary resources are secured, all parties involved are informed of important information, all potential attendees can make arrangements to be there, and all extant and potential problems are addressed. Furthermore, it is very important to identify a team of people who are committed to the project and allocate tasks amongst the group accordingly. When there is a network of individuals sharing the workload and responsibilities, it is easier to make sure that everything is taken care of and that no one is overloaded.
What does finishing this project mean to the MVC?
Finishing this year’s Culture of Writing Festival is a great success for MVC in multiple ways. Not only does the COWF support the goals of the QEP (particularly Goal 3: to foster a culture of writing at the college), but it also provides an opportunity for the MVC community to have fun, celebrate writing, and learn/develop important writing skills.
What departments or individuals on campus helped bring this initiative to life?
MVC’s Culture of Writing Festival depends heavily on college-wide cooperation and collaboration. Departments, groups, and individuals who played an instrumental role in this year’s event include (but are not limited to) Prof. Darius Frasure, MVC’s QEP Committee, Jean Baker, the Kevin Williams Writing Lounge (student writing club), the Academic Center for Writing, the Office of Student Life, Herbert McCullough, Daniel Birckbichler, Jennifer McGuire, Prof. Cristina Medina, Prof. Scott Powers, Prof. Luke Story, Stereophonic Fuzz (student musical duo), MVC Media, and Rebecca McDowell.
